W. & J. Graham's 40 Year Old Tawny Port is an extraordinarily sublime, deeply complex, and masterfully composed fortified wine that stands as a ultimate monument to the art of decade-long barrel maturation. Crafted from selected, high-quality wine parcels set aside across generations, this magnificent multi-generational blend represents a stunning average age of forty years in seasoned oak pipes. Over forty winters of gentle oxidation, nearly half the liquid's volume evaporates away, concentrating the remaining nectar into an amber-golden masterpiece that exhibits a characteristic pale green tinge along the mature rim. The nose is profoundly expressive and fragrant, unrolling a complex bouquet of dried plums, roasted hazelnuts, and ginger marmalade, seamlessly layered with nuances of warm toffee, dark chocolate, tobacco smoke, and ancient polished oak. On the palate, this full-bodied Tawny Port is luxuriously sweet, rich, and velvety, driving a deeply concentrated core of raisins, stewed figs, and butterscotch across an oily texture. An intense, vibrant line of natural acidity beautifully cuts through the dark honeyed layers, ensuring complete harmony before resolving into a remarkably persistent, warm, and highly complex finish.
Food Pairing: Pairs wonderfully with roasted walnut tart, creamy crème brûlée, dark chocolate truffles, or a selection of sharp, well-aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano.
James Suckling
Fantastic old tawny with a tight and lively palate of dried fruit, figs, bark and walnuts. Custard and some salted nuts, too. It’s full, sweet and glorious. Lovely candied fruit at the end.
Wine Spectator
Plump, juicy and forthright in feel, with a core that bursts with mulled dark cherry, dried peach and persimmon, bitter orange and date bread notes. Singed hazelnut and alder add underlying tension to the finish.
