Listening: Fill in the Blanks (L-FIB) is the third task type in Section 3 (Listening) of the PTE Academic, appearing 2 to 3 times per exam.
Unlike the Reading FIB tasks where choices are selected from drop-downs or word banks, L-FIB presents an academic transcript with 4 to 6 inline blank text boxes. You must listen to an audio recording lasting 30 to 60 seconds and type the exact missing words directly into each slot.
Because of Pearson’s integrated scoring framework, L-FIB is a high-yield, dual-contribution task:
Every correctly spelled word awards +1 point. There is no negative marking.
| Specification Parameter | System Rule & Operational Behavior |
|---|---|
| Item Frequency | 2 to 3 transcript units per exam |
| Blank Volume | 4 to 6 blanks per passage (8–15 total points) |
| Audio Length | 30 to 60 seconds (plays ONCE automatically) |
| Prep Countdown | Exactly 7 seconds before audio begins |
| Input Control | Type directly into boxes; navigation via [Tab] or mouse click |
| Timing Model | Operates inside the pooled listening clock. Recommended post-audio review: 30 to 45 seconds maximum. |
Candidates generally use one of two capture techniques:
| Methodology | Execution Flow | Pros & Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Method A: Direct Live Typing | Type directly into the UI boxes using the [Tab] key as the audio plays. | • PRO: Zero transcription transfer time; preserves section clock. • CON: Risk of typos while keeping visual track of text. |
| Method B: Scratchpad Shorthand | Jot words 1–5 onto the laminated physical booklet; type and verify after audio stops. | • PRO: Eliminates UI interface lag; handwriting matches phonetic memory. • CON: Consumes 30–45s of post-audio section clock to transcribe. |
Recommendation for Patel IELTS Students:
• If your typing speed is ≥ 45 WPM and you are comfortable using the [Tab] key to jump between text fields without looking down: Use Method A (Direct Typing).
• If looking down at the keyboard causes you to lose your visual place in the transcript: Use Method B (Scratchpad). Pre-write numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 on your notepad during the 7-second countdown, write words phonetically, and transcribe immediately when audio finishes.
Because Pearson’s NLP engine evaluates orthography via automated string-matching, close approximations earn 0 points.
| Trap Type | Error Mechanism | Consequence & Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The Plural S Omission | Missing or adding an “s” (e.g., writing institution instead of institutions). | 0 points awarded. Verify preceding quantifiers or subsequent plural verbs. |
| 2. Past Participle Dropping | Missing the “-ed” ending in passive or past constructions (e.g., establish instead of established). | 0 points awarded. Check auxiliary verbs (was, were, has been). |
| 3. Phonetic Variant Errors | Misidentifying homophones or spelling phonetically (e.g., principal vs. principle). | 0 points awarded. Use surrounding sentence semantics to determine the exact lexical item. |
When the speaker’s pronunciation swallows terminal sounds (elision), look at the surrounding syntax to recover the correct form:
| Phase | Time Window | Action Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Pre-Listen Buffer | 0:00 – 0:07 (7s) | Skim the first sentence; position cursor in Blank 1; predict part of speech and topic context. |
| Phase 2: Live Audio Tracking | 0:07 – ~0:50 | Follow text with cursor 2 words ahead of the speaker; capture missing words in real time. |
| Phase 3: Forensic Proofread & Exit | 30–45s max post-audio | Verify orthography, terminal inflections (-s, -ed), and syntactic agreement; click [Next]. |
