Select Missing Word (SMW) is the fifth task type in Section 3 (Listening) of the PTE Academic, appearing 1 to 2 times per exam.
In this task, you listen to a short, authentic academic or documentary audio recording lasting 20 to 70 seconds. The final word or phrase of the sentence is replaced by a beeping tone ([Beep]). Your goal is to choose the single most appropriate option (out of 3 to 5 radio button choices) that logically, grammatically, and semantically completes the speaker’s thought.
SMW contributes points exclusively to your Listening score (roughly 1 to 2 points total). Because of its low scoring weight, your primary operational objective is to anticipate the final thought in real time and exit within 5 to 10 seconds to safeguard your pooled sectional clock.
| Specification Parameter | System Rule & Operational Guideline |
|---|---|
| Task Volume | 1 to 2 questions per exam |
| Audio Duration | 20 to 70 seconds (plays ONCE automatically) |
| Preparation Buffer | Exactly 7 seconds before audio begins |
| Terminal Cue | Audio concludes with an acoustic tone / beep: [BEEP] |
| Selection Options | 3 to 5 options with circular radio buttons (select exactly 1) |
| Scoring System | Binary (+1 for correct option, 0 for incorrect). NO negative marking. |
| Post-Audio Budget | Maximum 5 to 10 seconds before clicking [Next] |
Unlike Multiple Choice (MCMA/MCSA) where you should ignore the choices during the prep window, SMW options are typically very short (often single words or 2- to 3-word noun phrases).
| Step | Target Action | Operational Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Scan Topic / Prompt | Read header sentence | Identify the subject area from the prompt text (e.g., “climate modeling”, “classical music”). |
| 2. Triage the Choices | Glance through word list | Identify grammatical word class (nouns vs. verbs) and check polarities (positive vs. negative). |
To identify the missing piece before the beep even sounds, track three continuous signals during playback:
| Pillar | Analytical Scope | Predictive Mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Global Discourse Arc | Whole audio trajectory | Track the underlying mini-narrative:
|
| 2. Pivot Signposts | Penultimate clause transition | Pay extreme attention to transition markers in the final 5 to 10 seconds:
|
| 3. Local Syntax & Collocations | Immediate 2–3 words before [BEEP] | Evaluate grammatical constraints directly leading into the tone:
|
| Phase | Time Window | Action Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Pre-Listen | 0:00 – 0:07 (7s) | Skim options; note polarities (positive vs. negative) and grammatical parts of speech. |
| Step 2: Live Tracking & Anticipation | 0:07 – Audio End | Follow the narrative arc; focus intently on the final sentence, pivot markers, and immediate leading words. |
| Step 3: Instant Tap & Exit | ≤ 5 seconds post-beep | Match anticipated thought to choices; select radio button; click [Next] immediately. |
“Throughout the late nineteenth century, independent railway operators rapidly expanded track mileage across the continent, fueled by generous governmental land grants and speculative venture capital. For several decades, this unchecked expansion stimulated rural commerce and created thousands of engineering livelihoods.”
“By the mid-1890s, however, redundant parallel routes saturated the transportation market, while escalating maintenance overheads outpaced freight revenues. When a series of poor grain harvests triggered a broader credit panic, these heavily leveraged rail syndicates suddenly faced… [BEEP]“
Correct Choice: Option 3 (severe financial insolvency)
Because Select Missing Word carries only 1 point per question, never pause to ponder your choice once the audio ends:
