Re-order Paragraphs (RO) is the third task type in Section 2 (Reading) of the PTE Academic, appearing 2 to 3 times per exam.
Unlike conventional reading comprehension tests that ask questions about an already cohesive text, Re-order Paragraphs presents a single academic narrative scrambled into 4 to 5 text boxes. Your objective is to drag and drop these boxes from the left source column into the right target column in their original, logically correct chronological or argumentative sequence.
This task contributes points exclusively to your Reading score (approximately 6 to 8 points). However, because of the unique way Pearson grades this task—known as Adjacent Pair Scoring—a single misplaced sentence can trigger a scoring cascade if you do not understand the underlying evaluation engine.
Many candidates assume they are scored on whether an individual sentence lands in its absolute slot (e.g., whether Sentence C is in Position 3). This is incorrect. Pearson’s algorithm evaluates correct adjacent pairs (couplets):
| Target Sequence: [ A → B → C → D ] | Adjacent Pair Evaluated | Point Value |
|---|---|---|
| Couplet 1 | [ A → B ] | +1 point |
| Couplet 2 | [ B → C ] | +1 point |
| Couplet 3 | [ C → D ] | +1 point |
| Total Available Score | 3 Distinct Couplets | 3 Points Total |
[ A → C → B → D ].
[ C → D → A → B ]:
The Primary Rule: Always focus on building unbreakable pairs (blocks of 2) rather than guessing absolute placements across the entire sequence.
| Anchor Category | Linguistic Identifier | Sequencing Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Independent Topic Sentence | Autonomous opening with zero backward reference markers. | Sentence 1 introduces the overarching subject using full nouns or indefinite articles. It makes complete sense in total isolation. |
| 2. Pronoun-Antecedent Links | He, She, It, They, These, Those. | A pronoun can never appear before its underlying noun (antecedent) has been introduced in an earlier sentence. |
| 3. Article Progression | Indefinite (A / An) → Definite (The / This). | First mention of a concept uses a / an or bare plural; subsequent references switch to the or demonstratives (this / these). |
| 4. Acronyms & Proper Names | Full formal title → Acronym or surname. | Full institutional names or complete personal names precede initialisms (e.g., World Health Organization precedes WHO). |
| 5. Discourse Direction | Additives, Adversatives, Causals. | Connectors indicate rhetorical vectors: Furthermore (add), However (contrast), Consequently (cause-and-effect outcome). |
Because Section 2 operates on a shared clock, cap each Re-order task at 1.5 to 2.0 minutes maximum:
| Step | Time Window | Action Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Hunt for Sentence 1 | 0:00 – 0:30 | Scan the first 3–4 words of every box. Eliminate all boxes with pronouns, demonstratives, or transition markers. Drag the standalone topic sentence to the top right. |
| Step 2: Form Strategic Couplets | 0:30 – 1:15 | Scan remaining boxes for explicit lexical hooks (Pronouns, The/This, Acronym expansions). Lock matching sentences together into blocks of two. |
| Step 3: Link Blocks Chronologically | 1:15 – 1:45 | Arrange paired couplets in logical, narrative, or cause-and-effect progression. |
| Step 4: Fluidity Check & Lock | 1:45 – 2:00 | Read the compiled text top-to-bottom silently. If it reads like a coherent publication excerpt, click [Next]. |
Final Validated Order: B → C → A → D (Score: 3/3 points, 100%).
| Trap Category | What Candidates Do Wrong | How to Avoid It |
|---|---|---|
| The “Absolute Slot” Mindset | Agonizing over whether Sentence C belongs in slot 3 or 4, wasting 3 minutes. | Focus on matching two sentences together into an adjacent pair; pair points carry the marks. |
| Missing Hidden Pronouns | Overlooking possessive determiners (its, their, such) buried 4 words into a sentence. | Read the entire first clause of each box to catch embedded references. |
| The False Chronology Trap | Assuming dates always appear in simple numerical order (1990, 2000, 2010), missing narrative flashbacks. | Track argumentative logic (premise → complication → result) rather than dates alone. |
| Over-Editing at the End | Shuffling the entire sequence in panic with 10 seconds remaining, breaking all intact pairs. | Once your pairs match logically, leave the order intact and click [Next]. |
